Tax investigation & Representation

Correspondence

When you receive a letter or phone call from HMRC it can be something of a shock, but there is no need to worry. It may be something as simple as confirming some of the information in your tax return. Even if  HMRC has decided to launch an enquiry into some aspect of your financial affairs, chances are the inconsistency they are investigating is simply an innocent mistake on your submission.

Received a letter from the tax man?

If you have received a letter from HMRC raising questions about your personal or business tax affairs, do not delay, speak to a tax advisor at your earliest convenience. You could incur further penalties if HMRC ultimately concludes that you are at fault.

Whatever the circumstances, your first step should be to seek professional advice from a trusted source. At Tax Champion, our discreet and knowledgeable tax advisors are here to support you throughout the enquiry process, from handling any correspondence and responding to HMRC on your behalf, to attending meetings and being present at prearranged visits.

Our professional advisors will be able to ascertain whether it is an Aspect Enquiry into some small part of your tax return, or a Full Enquiry. Whilst Aspect Enquiries can be launched at random, HMRC requires a reason to escalate into a Full Enquiry, and your advisor may be able to de-escalate this for you.

Your Charter

Your Charter, HMRC’s statement of rights and responsibilities for both itself and taxpayers, sets out its expectations for taxpayer cooperation with enquiries and investigations. It is important that you make yourself aware of your rights, and seek professional advice from an experienced tax advisor.
