Tax investigation & Representation

Meetings

If HMRC has questions regarding your tax return, they may request a meeting, whether that be face to face, on the telephone, or by video conference. It is the taxpayer’s right to be represented by a professional tax advisor at any meeting or visit to your business premises, so your first act on receiving a request to meet with the taxman should be to engage a trusted advisor.

Will the Inspector of Taxes come to my business premises or home?

A meeting at the beginning of an enquiry will often be combined with an agreed inspection of the business premises and records. If your business operates out of your home, this will mean that HMRC may ask to visit your residence. It is essential that your advisor is present to ensure that the visit goes smoothly. Your advisor will help you to provide HMRC with all requested information, and nothing additional, minimising any unnecessary impact on your business.

Towards the end of an enquiry, a meeting may be called to resolve outstanding points and agree a settlement. It is vital that your advisor be present in order to facilitate a mutually satisfactory conclusion to the investigation.

Tax Champion’s experienced and knowledgeable tax advisors are experts in negotiating with HMRC. We stay up to date on all tax legislation and proposed changes, as well as keeping apprised of HMRC’s internal governance, allowing us to bring enquiries to a swift close.

If you are ultimately unsatisfied with the decision made by HMRC in their investigation, you may decide to appeal against it at the Tax Tribunal. Tax Champion has experience of successfully representing past clients through the appeal process at First Tier Tribunal level.
